Helsinki, Finland
Here we are with our hosts, Gudrun and Al, who have taken us to see the harbour. It's the white, solid-looking thing in the background. No, not the ferry. |
|
We took a boat out into the harbour, and these kids are transfixed by the way the floating ice seems to merge back in our wake, removing evidence that anything dared to pass through it. |
This is a marina in another part of the harbour. Well, it is when the Baltic Sea hasn't frozen solid. Note the many footprints between the buoys. |
|
So, we fell victims to the tourist trap and went to the ice-bar. The walls, tables, and chairs are bricks of ice! Makes you wonder why they bother to put any in the drinks. |
The rest of us, also in the shiny 'thermal coats' provided for bar-goers. Here, you can tell that the bar is actually in a freezer. It was cooled to -10, but since the temperature on the street outside was -8 they weren't cooling it much. |

This is the Lutheran Cathedral on Senate Square, one of the iconic buildings of Helsinki, and visible from many places around town. The steps are left covered in snow to match it. |
Suomenlinna is a World Heritage listed island in Helsinki harbour, and you could say it's a nice place for a stroll. |
|
Another picture from Suomenlinna. Can you tell that we were amazed by the ice? |
